ENV 310 Soil Science and Sustainability


3 credit hours

This course introduces students to the formation of soils and the physical, chemical and biological soil properties used for the classification of soils. Other topics are the importance of soils in the hydrological cycle, the central role of soils in conventional, integrated and organic agricultural systems, and the sustainable and regenerative management and conservation of soils. Throughout this course, we will discuss environmental issues affecting and threatening soil quality in agricultural and non-agricultural land use and what needs to be done to increase the resilience and sustainability of our food and nature conservation processes. This course aims to increase the student’s awareness that soil is an essential resource for humanity and the entire Earth community that needs to be protected.

Prerequisite: CHE 110 Introduction To General, Organic, And Biological Chemistry  and ENV 110 Introduction To Environmental Science
