MAT 372 Secondary Math Methods


4 credit hours

Secondary Math Methods is a course designed to prepare prospective secondary mathematics teachers to plan, implement, and evaluate effective instruction in mathematics. The course covers 
topics such as: the nature and goals of mathematics education; the role of technology in mathematics teaching and learning; the development of mathematical understanding and reasoning; the selection and use of appropriate tasks, materials, and assessments; the differentiation of instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners; the integration of mathematical practices and content standards; and the reflection and improvement of one’s own teaching practice. The course requires students to engage in various activities, such as: reading and discussing research-based literature on mathematics education; designing and implementing mathematics lessons; observing and providing feedback to peers and mentor teachers; and participating in online and face-to-face discussions and collaborations. Teacher candidates will complete 30 clinical field hours. The course is aligned with the Michigan Department of Education Standards for the Preparation of Teachers of Mathematics for grade bands 5 – 9 and 7 – 12.
